What Is Dark Field Microscopy?

Dark Field microscopy is a simple technique of looking at unstained biological samples, enabling the samples to appear brightly illuminated against a dark (almost black) background.

When the microscope is fitted with a dark field condenser the rays of light are able to hit the specimen from different angles instead of a direct light source underneath the slide, the multiple rays hitting the specimen from various angles results in the rays being diffracted and reflected, sometimes referred to as the cone of light, and it is this cone that allows you to observe your specimen with the dark field illumination technique.

Dark field microscopy can be used to look at water-borne organisms both fresh water (pond life) and marine water, tissue culture, live bacteria, and is widely used for live blood analysis.

Each of the following suggested configurations include our Michrome6 Professional USB3 Digital Camera, specifically chosen for its ability to capture colour correct imaging in low light conditions such as in dark field applications.

Our 3 most popular configurations:

Option 1 - Entry Level (Easy to use)

Option 2 - Advanced Level

Option 3 - Professional Level (Experienced users recommended)

The Optico BM2000 is the top of the range ergonomically designed microscope, all the controls are easily accessible and comfortable when used specifically for extended periods of observation.

The included Infinity Plan Objectives produce a flat image across the field of view and perfect clarity. Also included is the standard bright field condenser enabling this microscope to be used for both bright field and dark field applications.

The 3W LED-LUX illumination system is the best solution to provide pure intense white light when using the higher magnification objectives, featuring the advanced XY stage design to ensure all the moving parts are concealed within the stage plate, as shown.
